What could you do now in order to avoid a future facelift?

Why do we lose facial volume?

The loss of facial volume is a key contributor to an aged appearance. It results in loose and sagging skin which the facelift aims to correct by simply stretching and removing excess tissue. Ultraviolet exposure destroys the matrix surrounding the cells in the skin by increasing production of enzymes that break it down. It takes very little sun exposure to activate these enzymes, therefore daily, year-round use of broad-spectrum sun protection is crucial. UV exposure also releases harmful free oxygen radicals. Additionally, a decrease in estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause slows down the production of matrix components contributing to accelerated aging and volume loss.

Can the right ingredients in topical skincare protect us from the volume loss?

Broad spectrum sunscreens can significantly limit UV-induced skin damage. Look for sunscreens containing such ingredients as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule or cinnamates. The best sunblocks are also enhanced with protective antioxidants such as L-ascorbic acid, resveratrol, green tea, vitamin E, glutathione, etc.

What are other key skincare ingredients that help prevent facial volume loss?

Retinoids, soy isoflavones and peptides are very helpful. Retinoids stimulate production of collagen and elastin. Peptides are the building blocks for proteins such as collagen.

Can optimal skincare replace the need for facial fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane®?

As clients move from their 40s into their 50s and above, fillers can effectively replace the lost volume, however the earlier we begin protecting our skin with optimal skincare, the more we reduce future need for fillers.
