Maintaining your skin's health sure is hard; there are just so many skin care products to choose! While this can greatly help in keeping the skin as young-looking as possible, all the effort may turn out to be futile because of some bad habits you are unintentionally making!

It’s never too late to stop them and to be back on track on your road to skin wellness. Here are some unhealthy practices that slowly destroy your skin:

  • Skipping the smiles for the frowns

Frown lines are real -- and they exist for a reason. When one is unhappy, the face is tensed into a bad posture, which is manifested by a frown, pursed lips, or uptight facial muscles. While you can’t help but to sulk, there is an easy way to avoid the frown: Move your ears back without having to touch them. Try it; it helps.

Bad Habits that Keep Your Skin Glowing | Chevy Chase Dermatology

  • Having a sweet tooth isn’t that sweet.

Having too many sweets does not only put you at risk for cavities, but it also speeds up the process of skin aging through glycation. This is when the sugar you intake attacks the skin's collagen and elastin, causing the skin to sag and wrinkle.

  • Ditching sunscreen

One thing that greatly contributes to the aging of your skin is sun exposure, which is where about 90% of all of your wrinkles come from. This means you are highly capable of controlling how your skin will look like in the long run. When going outdoors, even when it is not sunny, wearing a sunscreen of at least an SPF 30 can greatly give your skin some love.

  • Sleep is for the weak -- NOT.

Having enough sleep is extremely important not just for one's overall health, but also in maintaining the health and vibrancy of the skin. Lack sleep and you might be surprised to wake up feeling a little less taut in the face department.

  • Quit smoking. Just do it.

Smoking practically does no good to your body, including your skin. People who smoke are usually very good candidates for getting lip lines and crow's feet, not to mention, they're more likely to acquire a type of skin cancer in the future. Determination and perseverance are key!

Give your skin some love and ditch these unhealthy habits once and for all. On top of that, treat yourself to some nice facial treatment from your Chevy Chase Dermatology to keep your skin healthy and blemish-free at the same time!
