Have Sun Spots? 3 Tips to Help You Get Rid of Them

August 15, 2018

BBL Treatments Washington DCIf you have spent most of the summer outdoors doing things that you love most— swimming, lounging, barbecuing, hiking, or anything else— then your skin may have a few signs of sun damage to show for it. And although some sun spots fade on their own, you may have some others that are going to stick around for the long haul. So, what are some tips that we at Chevy Chase Dermatology have to help you get rid of them? Let’s take a look and see!

Look Into Treatment Options

One of the most effective ways to get rid of sunspots is with IPL or intense pulsed light. IPL works by targeting the melanin in your skin (the dark spots) and breaks it up; leaving you with less visible sunspots in the process. Additionally, we also have some bleaching or skin lightening creams that may help to lighten the appearance of your sun spots as well.

Wait Until The Cooler Months for Treatment

Although we can perform treatment during any time of the year, some of the bleaching agents that we use may make your skin hypersensitive to the sun which means that you’re more prone to burning. Additionally, when you are spending a lot of time out in the sun, you are more likely to get some more sunspots which makes treatment less effective. For the most part, we usually encourage patients to wait until colder months to get treatment because that’s when you spend more time indoors.

Wear Sunscreen

To prevent against getting more sunspots, make sure that you are wearing a sunscreen every day. Look for a sunscreen that contains ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in it; both of these ingredients act as a substantial barrier against your skin and the sun.

By using these three tips, you can hopefully get rid of your sunspots and stop them from coming back anytime soon. To learn more about sunspot treatment, schedule a consultation with our Chevy Chase office today and call us at 301.656.SKIN.
