Spider veins can be inconvenient to many as they cause the veins in your legs, thighs, and calves to appear blue or purple in a spider web design. While they may be bothersome to look at, they are mostly harmless and painless.

Why Do I Have Spider Veins?

There are many reasons why you could be experiencing spider veins. These reasons include the following:

  • Prolonged standing or sitting as this causes extra pressure on the veins in the legs.
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy can cause spider veins because of the extra weight you are carrying.
  • Hormonal changes can swell the legs causing spider veins.
  • Any injuries that you’ve had to the affected area
  • Too much sun causing sun damage

Best Way to Treat Spider Veins: Sclerotherapy

Spider veins usually start showing in the legs when you are in your twenties, and as you age, they become more and more evident. At Chevy Chase Dermatology, we genuinely believe that the best treatment option for spider veins is sclerotherapy.

How Sclerotherapy Works

Sclerotherapy is a very simple and quick procedure. The process involves using alcohol to clean the area of the problematic skin before injecting a sclerosant solution into the vein through a small needle. To keep the area protected, we then apply a dressing to cover the skin.

Quick Recovery Time

Once your procedure is complete, we recommend that you use compression socks consistently for seven days. While you may feel slight cramping and a burning sensation in the treated area, the pain is usually manageable.

In order to completely treat your spider veins, you will need to come back to our office, Chevy Chase Dermatology, to have more treatments done until we have reached the targeted results.
